Sloan presents at international conference

LaRue Love Sloan, Ph.D., the L.M. McKeely Professor of English Literature at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, recently presented at Exploring the Renaissance: An International Conference hosted by the South Central Renaissance Conference in Hot Springs, Ark., March 5-7.

Sloan鈥檚 work was titled "Anticipating Milton: Adam, Eve, and 鈥楶aradise Lost鈥� in John Ford's 鈥�'Tis Pity She's a Whore.鈥�"

She recently served as a judge for the Shakespeare Competition sponsored by the Monroe branch of The English-Speaking Union, an international charity founded in 1918 to promote "international understanding and friendship through the use of the English language."

Competitors from local high schools were required to recite a monologue from one of Shakespeare's plays, as well as one of Shakespeare's sonnets. The winner will compete in the national Shakespeare Competition in New York.

Sloan teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Shakespeare and scientific writing, the junior seminar (poetry/drama), world literature, and honors courses in English and American literature. She earned her Ph.D. in comparative literature from Texas Tech University and her master鈥檚 and bachelor鈥檚 degrees from East Texas State University, now Texas A&M at Commerce.

Her primary research interests are Shakespeare and Women鈥檚 Studies.

Sloan is currently writing on gender, sexuality and identity as themes in 鈥溾€楾he Taming of the Shrew鈥� for General Themes in Literature鈥� (Facts on File, 2009) and researching empirical medicine and Early Modern analogues of mummers鈥� plays in Shakespeare鈥檚 "All鈥檚 Well That Ends Well."
